Visual Studio support announced for Xamarin Starter edition. But what does this mean for Xamarin Forms?

Yesterday Xamarin announced they will be enabling Visual Studio support for the Starter Edition. This follows Microsoft’s announcement of Visual Studio Community at the Visual Studio Connect event.

This is fantastic news, but what does it mean for Xamarin Forms? The starter edition does not support Xamarin Forms. Only Indie and above support it. One would expect that the support for Visual Studio Community will also be available for the Indie edition, but there has  been no confirmation of this. It wouldn’t really make any sense to only support it with the free edition.

If this support is to be extended to the Indie edition then Xamarin Forms developers will no longer need to purchase the costly $999 Business edition or be confined to using Xamarin Studio. That said, there are ways around this which I will share with you in my next post, but it would be nice not to resort to workarounds and have the option to work exclusively in Visual Studio.
